A fume hood is a device that resembles a cupboard and is designed to keep dangerous fumes and vapors out of the environment during laboratory experiments. There are two basic types of fume hoods, ducted and ductless (also called recirculating). Both types of hoods follow essentially the same principles. Contaminated air is sucked in from the open or front part of the cabinet. The air is then purified and released outside the building (ducted fume hoods) or released back into the room (recirculating fume hoods).

There is some debate in the scientific community as to which type of fume hood is better. Proponents of ductless fume hoods point out that ductless hoods are less expensive and require less maintenance that ducted hoods. Ductless hoods are also more portable. And a quality ductless fume hood will take constant readings of the airflow and alert the user if there is a problem or if the filter needs to be changed.

But not everybody is crazy about recirculating fume hoods. The Princeton University Laboratory Safety Manual specifically warns researchers against using ductless fume hoods. They argue that the filters do not always work properly and that the potential for toxic air being released back into the laboratory is high. They also argue ductless fume hoods are not equipped to handle emergency events, like a toxic spill.

Perhaps there is no one size fits all answer. Before selecting a fume hood, a laboratory should consider its budget, its needs for flexibility, and the toxicity of the materials being examined. A small laboratory with a tight budget that is working with minimally toxic materials might well benefit from a ductless fume hood, whereas a laboratory dealing with more dangerous materials might decide it worth the extra money to invest in a ducted fume hood.
